SOL3 MIO DELIVER WAIATA ANTHEM ‘TAKU WHAKAWHITINGA RĀ’

Operatic trio SOL3 MIO delivers ‘Taku Whakawhitinga Rā,’ a beautiful Te Reo Maori rendition of their track ‘O Sole Mio’, as a part of 2022’s Waiata Anthems Week.

This year, Waiata Anthems will build on the legacy of the 1972 Petition with 20 new waiata set for release on September 2nd. Included in the cross-genre representation are Rob Ruha, Ladi6, Drax Project, Georgia Lines, and YAHYAH, to name a few.

This history of ‘O Sole Mio’ dates back to 1898, having been one of the most beloved Neapolitan songs of the last 100 years. It was later released by Elvis as ‘It’s Now or Never’ in English, and is being released today as a special translation to celebrate Waiata Anthems Week.

Recorded in three different countries across the world, the trio were honoured to be a part of the annual campaign. “What a special time in Aotearoa to be able to share our art and our music in Te Reo,” says Pene Pati, one-third of SOL3 MIO. “This is important as we honour the land that we occupy, and also pay tribute to Aotearoa and its heritage.”
